This week I am working in Arcadia helping a childhood friend of mine finish renovating his home. He has been working on the project for the better part of a year, but he has got to a point where he needed some help. There are just some things that he wanted to do in the house that he couldn’t do on his own, and he enlisted my help.
It was a good excuse to get out of work for the week.
While I am helping with some of the work, there are things that I will not be doing. For example, he has someone coming in to do the Windows Replacement in Arcadia as neither of us have ever replaced windows before. In those types of cases, it makes more sense to hire an expert as it saves both time and the possibility of screwing that part of the renovation up. We’re both man-enough to admit when there is a job we can’t handle, and thankfully there is talent in the area that can do the work we can’t.
We are hoping to get most of the work done here by the end of the week because I need to be back at work on Monday. It has been a good week – working by day and visiting by night. I am lucky I had the opportunity to come help him out.
Up until yesterday, everything was on schedule for the property that we had been working on for the last couple of weeks. We picked up this small, three bedroom bungalow a couple of weeks ago with the intention of quickly fixing it up and flipping it for a profit. Like all properties that you are going to flip, speed was of the essence and the longer that we held onto it, the less money we were going to make.
In a nutshell, we were in a rush.
But we had not accounted for something to happen at the last minute. It was an accident, but the cost of once choice was going to make the difference of us being able to sell the home right away or wait until we were able to get it fixed up.
Let me tell you the story of how a broken window just about cost us a house sale.
It was the last day of the renos, and we were just doing the finishing touches and staging the home. The lawn had grown a little longer than I had liked, so I decided to take the lawn mower out and give it a once-over before being done for the day.
It really only should have taken twenty minutes, but I never made it to those last five minutes.
Disaster struck when I caught a rock in the lawnmower and it flung the rock through the window in the house.
It broke instantly. All of a sudden, the home was not in saleable condition.
It wasn’t exactly how I envisioned how the day was going to go.
But I had an ace up my sleeve. I had a buddy that worked installing windows in Glendale, and I called him to see if he could help me out. I explained the situation, and he hopped in his car and was replacing the window just a half-hour after we hung up.
It was exactly what I needed.
Thanks to the last minute window repair we will still be able to put the house on the market on Monday, and I am hoping that it sells right away. Fingers crossed that there are no other problems in the next few days.
Last weekend we had the unfortunate problem of having a baseball go through the windows on our house. Two of them were broken while we were playing ball out in the yard and my wife wasn’t happy. I don’t blame her, but it was an accident, and it was something that we were going to have to fix.
But we didn’t have the money.
Thankfully it was a pay week, so I received my paycheck on Thursday and now we have the funds to fix the window on the house. I know that you are going to tell me that I could just use my insurance, but it really isn’t an option right now, so we are going to pay for it out of our pockets.
So, I decided to find a shop that sold Milgard windows in Toluca Lake. I was not only trying to find someone that could do the work on short notice, but do the repairs at a price we could afford.
Thankfully, I was able to find both.
The techs were out today replacing the broken windows and by mid-afternoon, everything was completed.
It was a painless experience.
While I wish this wouldn’t have happened, I did learn one thing: it is not smart to play baseball in your own backyard.
While I don’t get a lot of time off from my job, I try to make the most of it. This means that I go on trips for myself, and sometimes I go visit relatives to help them out. That is exactly what I managed to do last week when I went to visit my Aunt Joanne.
When I was younger, my aunt Joanne took care of me, so as an adult I try to take care of her. She is on her own, so I try to help out where I can.
This week, I was there helping her fix the windows on her house. One of the kids on the block had thrown a baseball through her window, and it needed to be replaced.
Since I was not an expert when it came to replacing windows, we decided that it made sense to find a place that specialized in replacement windows in Los Angeles instead. They would be able to do the job properly and in a short amount of time, so it made the most sense.
So that is exactly what we did.
I managed to find a contractor that replaced the window and by the time they were done, the house looked as good as new. Hopefully the kids on the block won’t be throwing balls around her house any time soon..
This week I will be heading over to Studio City to do some work on behalf of my employer. They have many of us portfolio managers traveling over the country to make up for the recent labor shortage in our workforce. I am hoping that it is a stopgap measure, but I won’t know for sure until they have some new staff in our office.
In the meantime all of us in the office have had to step-up our game.
This week I will be heading to Studio City on business. I have been tasked with purchasing Milgard Ultra Woodclad Windows In Studio City for one of our corporate properties there. The facility there has needed new windows for some time now, but no one cared to spend the money on this type of building maintenance.
I thought it was a big mistake.
I brought the topic to the attention of management at one of our boardroom meetings, and now I have been tasked with getting the job done.
Traveling to Studio City will be a great way to get out of the office for awhile and I am really looking forward to getting some work done while on the road.
I can’t wait until it is time to go.
