Drying out the Basement

After our sump pump quit working sometime last week, I found myself standing in a foot of water in our basement.  As a home owner, that is the last thing that you ever want to see.  Events such as this cause you to feel a myriad of emotions all at once: despair, anger, sadness and hopelessness.  I couldn’t help but wonder how I was ever going to get all this water out of my basement.

This problem was bigger than I could handle on my own.

Instead of trying to tackle it on my own, I decided to enlist the help of a company that specialized in water damage cleanup to do the work.  I knew that they would know the right procedures to use, they would have the right equipment and know exactly what to look for – all things that I would overlook.

It was the best thing I could have done.

They got to work right away and pumped the water out from the basement.  That didn’t take them long and now they are drying it out before making the repairs.

It feels good to see some progress.

While I know that things won’t be fixed overnight, I am confident that they will be able to get my home back into a liveable condition.  Hopefully I’ll never have to deal with this kind of problem ever again.

Fixing the Kitchen after a Dishwasher Leak

I have always been thrifty.  If I can save a dollar, I will do work myself, or buy things on clearance.  For the most part, this has worked well for me over the years, but from time to time saving money this way is a bad idea.

Let me share an example with you.

A few weeks ago, I was able to buy a dishwasher on clearance at our local appliance store.  They were clearing out some of their refurbished models, and I saw it as a great opportunity to save a couple of dollars.  Bringing it home, I hooked it up myself as it was cheaper than paying a technician to do it.

That was a big mistake.

As it turned out, I didn’t attach the drain hose properly, so the first time I used the dishwasher, I had water all over the floor of the kitchen and into the basement.

Thankfully, I knew a good water damage restoration company in the area that was able to come out quickly to assess the damage.  They were able to provide me a quote and get started on the work right way.

Now the kitchen is as good as new and I learned a valuable lesson: sometimes it is better to pay the money and leave installing appliances to the experts.

Replacing my Front Door

IMG_0868 One of the things that has always been on my list for home renovations has been the front door of my house.  It never really fit the look of the house and I often wondered if the previous owners just picked it up on sale.

While the door has been functional, it has never been pretty, but there has never really been enough extra money in my budget to replace it.  I suppose it is my own fault for making other home renovations more of a priority, but the time has finally come to do something about it.

I decided to replace my front door once and for all – but I knew that I wasn’t handy enough to do it on my own.

I needed help.

So, I went online to see if there was a company that specialized in Replacement Doors And Windows Silver Lake, and it didn’t take me long to find one that was willing to help me out.  I knew the exact style of door that I was looking for, and I booked the installation to happen later this week.

I really shouldn’t have waited so long to do this renovation to my home – I know that the transformation is going to be amazing.

Helping Grandma Fix the Garage

For the last week I have been out helping my grandmother get things done around the house.  While her mind is still all there, she doesn’t get around as well as she used to, so some of us grandkids take the time to come out and help her out.

At this time of year, we help her to rake up leaves, finish her garden and get the house ready for the winter.  I also made a point to dust her house including vacuuming all of the carpets in her home so that everything will be good until spring.

But the one thing that I couldn’t do on my own was fix her garage door.  I don’t know what happened, but the door quit working altogether and needed to be repaired.  Since I knew that I was out of my league, I picked up the phone and found a company that provided garage door service in Coquitlam BC, and booked them to come out.

It didn’t take the repair technician very long to figure out exactly what the problem was, and with a little bit of adjusting, he was able to get the garage door working again.

My grandmother and I were both very impressed.

Now that the garage door works, we will be able to get her garage cleaned out before I head back home at the end of the week.  I think she will feel a lot better knowing that everything has been taken care of before winter.

Taking Care of my Back

With all of the time I spend sitting down at the computer, my back doesn’t always feel very good.  I thought about getting a new office chair, but instead I decided that it would make more sense to get pads and seats for all of the chairs in our home that are designed to help support a poor back.

It will take some time to decide just how many I need, but I think it will be a solid investment – I need my back for many more years to come.
