Drying out the Basement

After our sump pump quit working sometime last week, I found myself standing in a foot of water in our basement.  As a home owner, that is the last thing that you ever want to see.  Events such as this cause you to feel a myriad of emotions all at once: despair, anger, sadness and hopelessness.  I couldn’t help but wonder how I was ever going to get all this water out of my basement.

This problem was bigger than I could handle on my own.

Instead of trying to tackle it on my own, I decided to enlist the help of a company that specialized in water damage cleanup to do the work.  I knew that they would know the right procedures to use, they would have the right equipment and know exactly what to look for – all things that I would overlook.

It was the best thing I could have done.

They got to work right away and pumped the water out from the basement.  That didn’t take them long and now they are drying it out before making the repairs.

It feels good to see some progress.

While I know that things won’t be fixed overnight, I am confident that they will be able to get my home back into a liveable condition.  Hopefully I’ll never have to deal with this kind of problem ever again.

Shopping for Some New Clothes

After we had a bit of an issue with moldy clothes after we forgot to throw them in the dryer before a week-long trip, I found myself in a situation where I just didn’t have any clothes for work.  Well, I guess I did have clothes, but they would be unsightly and unhealthy to wear, so I put them in the garbage.

Thankfully my boss was okay with me wearing street clothes one day at work, but in my line of work, street clothes are definitely not appropriate.

So, I had to find some new work clothes as soon as possible.

I heard about a sale on some barbers & stylists aprons online so I decided to check them out.  While I usually would rather try clothing on before I bought it, the store that I was looking at online had a great return policy, so I felt comfortable buying them from the comfort of my own home.  I loved the fact that the prices were a fraction of what I would pay locally and there were so many designs to choose from.

I picked out my favorites.

The clothes should be here by the end of the week and that will be in time for me to work on the weekend.

I can’t wait.

Thankful for my Mentor

While it might seem like I have everything together, the truth of the matter is that I count on my mentor to help me grow beyond my current skillset.  You see, I have wanted to have a serious rental portfolio for years and there is a certain level of knowledge required to make that happen.  Since I realized that I didn’t have the required skillset on my own, I sought out someone in the local area that was an expert in rental properties.

I didn’t just work with the first person I met.  I decided to look at this much like you would look at a job interview, and therefore I had some questions for my possible mentors to find the right one that would meet my needs.  In fact, Mike, who is my current mentor, was the fourth person that I spoke with, and I think from the get-go we knew we would be a good fit.

I can still remember my first day working with him to try and find some replacement windows in Los Angeles for an apartment building he was renovating.  I made so many mistakes that first day, but somehow I was able to come out the other side of that task a little smarter.

I know that I have a long ways to go before I am any kind of real estate mogul, but I am so thankful that I can learn from one of the best in the industry right here by my home.  I am so thankful for my mentor.
