Listening to My Niece Play Her Recorder

It seems that I forgot about the stages of music that we go through while attending school.  I do remember my days playing the trumpet and how that sound that I made just about made my parents crazy, but I forgot what came before “real” band class.  But I was reminded today when I attended my niece’s first concert at school.

She is in grade four, and at that stage they are just starting out learning about music.  So, I had the opportunity to go listen to her play, but instead of playing what I would call a real instrument, they were playing recorders.  While it was not the most joyous sound that I have ever heard, they actually sounded ok – okay as far as a recorder can go.

I can’t wait to see how she does next year when she picks out a real instrument to play.  Hopefully she will follow in my footsteps – but we will have to wait and see.
