Direct Mail Marketing Basics for Internet Marketers and Online Business Owners
When your business almost exclusively operates over the Internet, you may forget that many people simply do not use the Internet regularly, if at all, so you could be missing potential targets. After all, you probably sell most of your products and services to people who are well versed in internet protocol and who use the internet as their primary tool for, well, just about everything: communication, entertainment, even employment! We tend to forget, however, that there are tons of people who only use the internet for a few minutes throughout the day, if at all! So what can you do to reach these people? One of the most effective ways to bring publicity to your business without using the internet is by using direct mail.
One mistake that people make is to think that direct mail pieces have to be long letters. Getting people interested in your products and services doesn’t require writing pages and pages of ad copy. This is absolutely not true! Some of the best direct mail pieces are postcards with just a few words on them! What kind of mail you are going to send completely depends on the business you have and the audience you are targeting. You might need a longer letter. But then again, sometimes you should only send out a quick postcard that has a picture on it and a website address. It’s important not to assume anything before you begin. You should keep in mind that direct mail marketing is identical to email marketing in that people get tired of getting mail that is trying to push them into buying something. A simple letter letting people know about an issue in the community or simply teaching them about something in your chosen niche will often be better received than a plain old sales pitch. You will see that if you use this tip, people will be more likely to read the mail you send as opposed to throwing it directly in the garbage. Everyone likes free items, so you should capitalize on this by rewarding your customers.
You’ll need to build a mailing list in order to effectively market via direct mail. This works similar to your e-mail opt in list. You can advertise your products and services to people you know are looking for them once you’ve collected enough names and mailing addresses. Collecting mailing addresses doesn't have to be difficult. There are many places you will be able to do so like your website and at events. If you are only sending mail to targets that you know want it, the odds of you selling something will go up drastically. Don’t be threatened by direct mail. With a little practice, it’ll become second nature. As you continue to do direct mailing, it will become effortless. You may find that direct mailing is more profitable to you than all the online marketing you do, put together. Be sure to stay with it. Sales will add up in no time.
