Earn Extra Cash with a Bartender Job
Have you ever considered a career as a bartender? You can be a bartender at a restaurant, a club, a hotel, or pool hall. With the economy struggling like it is at the present moment, now is not the time to just sit around and do nothing. With a bartending job, you can make the money that it takes to get through this recession, and still have some leftover to spend on yourself. Just by working part time, some bartenders are able to double their day job income. As a beginner you can expect to make around $150 per shift, on average.
Contrary to everything you have ever heard, you do not have to have any previous experience to get a bartending job. In fact, every skill save the making of drinks that you need to bartend, you probably already have. If you decide to get a bartending job you will need to develop ways to flush out and showcase these skills.
Some skills that you probably already possess and will need to be a bartender are conflict resolution, problem solving, inventory management, and customer service. Almost all jobs today will require these skills. If you can show a bar manager that you have them and highlight your personality you have an excellent shot at getting a bartending job with no experience.
Always be sure to write a bartending specific resume when you are applying for a bartender job. Irrelevant details like the ability to use explorer, word and excel will only aggravate the person reading your resume. Bar managers are very busy people. Don't waste their time or your own. Only include relevant skills. Some skills you have probably picked up on other jobs that would relate to bartending are customer service, inventory management, accounting, and conflict resolution. Include these in your resume and tailor them to apply to bartending.
Make sure that your cover letter is convincing of your bartender related skills as well. Make it sound catchy and to the point. Remember, not a lot of rambling. You will want to also make sure that your personality comes out in your cover letter. For example, you could write a cover letter that explains how you handled a difficult situation. In turn, this will show that you can handle difficult people and situations if they were to ever arise while you were on the job.
Making drinks is only a small fraction of what you will do as a bartender, and it is an easy skill to learn. I am not talking about spinning bottles or juggling glasses but knowing the standard drinks and making them well. Expert Village has an excellent video series on how to make drinks and learn bartending techniques. You can find it online and practice at home. But don't worry about fully developing this skill, you will learn it mostly on the job.
Do not worry about having the skill of actually making drinks. If you commit yourself to learning standard recipes like a screwdriver, madras, cosmopolitan, martini, and a few others you will be fine. Bartenders make it seem like memorizing drinks is tough but most drinks are built on a foundation of only a few ingredients, once you know the basics you will be able to build from there easily.
Right now, doubling your day job income probably seems impossible. But I have seen it happen tons of times. Bartending part-time can put immediate cash in your pocket and help you get through these tough times. If you just truly decide that you want to do it, believe in yourself, follow this advice and stay persistent, you will get a bartending job. Good luck.
