Lasik Surgery Step by Step

by Jayson Lee

The lasik eye surgery procedure itself is a fairly straightforward procedure. You should not feel any real pain, you are conscious the whole time and the whole process is completed very quickly. The following is a step by step general overview of the surgery. Bear in mind that the process used by your surgeon or lasik center may differ slightly. Talk to your doctor about what to expect.

A comprehensive eye examination is administered prior to your having lasik eye surgery. During this examination, a battery of tests will be performed. Your eyesight will be measured, the health of your eyes will be assessed and a map of your eyes will be made. The findings from these tests will form the basis for your lasik treatment.

When you arrive for your surgery, tests will be conducted on the laser that will be used for the procedure to calibrate it and ensure its accuracy. The level of correction to be applied to your eye is set on the computer that controls the laser. It is the computer that determines how the laser will be applied during your surgery.

When it is finally time for you to have your surgery, you will lie down, anaesthetic eye drops will be placed in one of your eyes and a patch will be positioned over the opposite eye. Your eye will be numbed for the duration of the procedure by the drops and no additional anaesthetic is necessary. The eye to be operated on first will be held open by a speculum.

A small, blinking light will be turned on above your eye and you will be asked to focus on it. You will start to hear the ticking sound the laser makes. The light you are focusing on will begin to blur as the corneal flap is made by the laser.

Once treatment is completed, more eye drops will be placed in your eye. The procedure is then repeated for the second eye if you are having both eyes done, as most people do.

Once surgery is complete for both eyes, you will be directed to sit up and rest for a few moments. It usually takes less than one minute of laser time per eye, but plan on the appointment taking an hour to an hour and a half to account for preparation, resting and any unscheduled delays.

While the lasik procedure itself is quick and painless, there are a number of other factors that need to be considered by a prospective patient. Lasik surgery involves risk, potential complications and expenses that your health insurance provider likely will not cover. If you are thinking about lasik eye surgery, it is crucial that you speak with your doctor and consider all of the factors in choosing whether or not to have the surgery.
