How to Use Stale Bread in Your Recipes

Perhaps the two heel ends of the bread always have a habit of going uneaten in your house, or perhaps you regularly find yourself confronted with whole loaves of stale bread that you simply forgot were there before you opened a new package. Whatever the reason, you do not have to feel wasteful and throw that bread out! There are many uses for stale bread, and you will find that all of them are quite tasty and can be used in some very easy crockpot recipes like crockpot meatloaf.

There are a few general uses for stale bread, which we can look at first. If you just have a few small bits of bread left over, you might want to cook them in the oven over a very low heat to dry them out, before grinding them with a meat grinder or crushing them with a rolling pin.

This is a very good way of making your own breadcrumbs for stuffing recipes or fried scallops without having to buy them from the store. If you have larger pieces of bread left over, you can cut them into small cubes and dry them to make croutons or cut them into small pieces for crackers. These are both very good with soup. Actually, this taste better than normal crackers and you can use fresh or stale slices to make them.

As well as making crockpot beef recipes with your stale bread, you might want to dip it into hot, salty water before frying it on a well-buttered griddle until brown on both sides. This is a great recipe for cold mornings when all you have in the house is dry bread. It is great served with syrup or butter.

If you are using rye bread, you will need to heat some bacon fat in the frying pan until it is hot. Then add the bread and brown both sides of it. Place a poached egg on each slice. If you find yourself with a lot of stale bread to work with and you don’t want to make a savory dish, such as healthy crockpot recipes, you can use it in a dessert. To make Brown Betty, you need to layer stale bread over chopped apples in a baking dish. Begin with the bread on the bottom and add layers of apple then more bread. For every apple layer, add some brown sugar and cinnamon. If the apples are tart, you can use more sugar. Finish with a layer of apple and top this dish with breadcrumbs mixed with butter. Cook covered and then uncover and bake for an hour. This recipe is very tasty, a great way to use leftover bread and goes very well with some ice cream or confectioner’s sugar.
