Shedding Light On The Cooking Area In The Kitchen

by Ned Dagostino

I'm sure you know that proper illumination is essential to enhance your work efficiency. That's why you have a study lamp right on your desk or work-table. In the same way you should have proper lighting in the kitchen. You may not notice it, but the dim atmosphere adds to the bother of cooking four meals day in and day out.

It's not that the kitchen is dark, per se. It's just that the lighting is not properly designed. We just make sure that we get 'bright' lights and that's it. We hardly ever think of things like shadows and dark zones. These shadows, which may be cast by any number of things in the kitchen, make the cooking area darker than the rest of the kitchen.

Your kitchen needs to be cheery and bright. Otherwise cooking will be a drag. Modern kitchen furniture has recognized this fact by manufacturing cabinet units which have recessed lighting fixtures. Leaf through a kitchen furniture catalog for ideas so that you can renovate the kitchen with these ready made articles.

You don't have to wait to get the whole kitchen redone. You can easily mount some lights on the underside of the cabinets yourself. Then again, you may want to get an electrician in to do the job for you. Use the latest economy range of lights to keep the electricity bill down. LED lighting is all the rage nowadays so you should take advantage of this type of lighting.

An idea which merits consideration is to use those small lighting gadgets that you just press-fix on to almost any surface. You tap them to turn them on and off. Carrying their own long life battery inside, you don't need to do a pin of work to implement this kind of lighting. They're cheap, dinky, durable and easy to use. Just fix them against the underside of the kitchen cabinet over the cooking area and see them in action.

These units are unobtrusive since they're going to be under the cabinets. So you need not worry about issues like whether the new lighting fixtures will go well with the existing decor. The only way they'll come to your notice is when you switch them on!

If you usually send out for your meals then putting up these lights is not a top-priority project for you. But if you do like to cook and do spend a lot of time in the kitchen, then you will really appreciate the extra light. To keep the project budget down to the bare minimum you should try the touch lights described above.

Once you appreciate the difference these additional lights make to the kitchen work area, you'll quickly realize that there are many other areas in the house which could be brightened up with under cabinet lighting. So, what's holding you back?
