There are approximately 72,000 interior designers in the U.S. today. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that this number will increase by 19% from 2006 to 2016 and has a faster than average employment growthpotential.Approximately 26% of interior designers are self-employed, 26% work in specialized design and the rest into the architectural design and landscaping services, furniture and home-furnishing /, construction equipment and supplies dealers, and building construction. In the planning phase, the interior designer meets with the client to determine how the space will be used and to get an idea of their needs and budget. Once the programming is completed the interior will be moved to the draft plan which they often use computer-aided design (CAD) for the completion of the proposed design and estimating material, labor and their service fee.

Subsequently, the interior complete their material specifications that may include: pause, furniture, lighting, flooring, wall coverings, and art. Depending on the project, they may also be submitted drawings for approval of a building inspector. If their design includes a structural work, they may also have to coordinate with an architect or engineer.

From an educational perspective of the National Council for Interior Design Accreditation have approximately 145 accredited bachelor’s degrees in the United States for interior designers. National Association of Schools of Art and Design also has 250 post-secondary institutions with programs in art and design.
