Do you have a couch I have to lie down on?
Traditionally, psychoanalysis was conducted with the patient lying on a couch while the therapist was seated out of view. While there are sound theoretical reasons for this arrangement, we've found that it is more important that you be comfortable. We have made every effort for New Leaves Clinic to be a relaxing, serene place for you to visit. There are chairs, couches and chaise lounges in different rooms. The procedure for seeking services is the same as for adults (see above): If you decide to use your insurance, contact your benefit company by calling the number on the reverse of your insurance identification card. Make it clear that you would like your child or adolescent to be seen by Dr Mills (Dr Roll does not see children). Follow their instructions.
Do you test for Attention Deficit Disorder?
I have written elsewhere about the profound implications surrounding the the process of diagnosis in general, and the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in particular. In summary, however, there is little justification for the notion that ADD is something you either have or don't have, little justification for believing that attention difficulties can necessarily be related to a single cause, and little justification for believing that medicine alone can solve the problem. The local public school system has a Pupil Appraisal Team that carries out competent and expert psycho-educational assessments on children that need them. These are performed according to a detailed set of procedures that are specified in a document call the Pupil Appraisal Handbook - Bulletin 1508 (usually referred to as Bulletin 1508). This handbook contains guidelines for assessment as well as criteria for defining a child's academic status as "exceptional".
What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?
Many people confuse the definition of psychologist with that of a psychiatrist. Psychologists and psychiatrists have two different types of degrees. Psychologists have a doctorate in philosophy, whereas psychiatrists have a doctorate in medicine. Both disciplines work in mental health, and both have equivalent quality in education. The primary difference is that psychologists are trained in mental health philosophy and technique, whereas psychiatrists are trained in mental health physiology.I have written elsewhere about the profound implications surrounding the the process of diagnosis in general, and the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in particular.
How long will this take?
Session length may vary. A typical session is 1 hour. However, some clients prefer intensive meetings (e.g., 2-4 hours in length) in order to address issues more quickly or to complete treatment in fewer visits. For example, intensive sessions are often useful to couples who are experiencing a crisis. Also, we find that men sometimes prefer short-term, intesive sessions over long-term therapy.Licensed psychologists are bound by strict ethical standards set forth by the American Psychological Association (APA).
What is the difference between a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a social worker?
The title of psychologist is reserved for individuals who have a doctoral-level degree (PhD, PsyD, EdD), and are licensed by the state. The doctoral degree typically requires 5-7 years of graduate training beyond the undergraduate level, plus a year-long supervised internship, and a further year of supervised work before licensure. In Washington State, a psychologist must pass a national examination and an oral examination in order to practice.Parents, school psychologists, teachers and other involved staff members complete an evaluation process and these members of the 'Building Team' meet.
Am I a failure if I go to a psychologist (or am I a failure as a parent if I take my child)?
No, I do not believe this to be true. However, the answer depends upon who you listen to. Unfortunately, many in our society still view a visit to a psychologist as a sign of some inherent weakness or deficiency in the person. The good news is that many others are seeing this view as outdated and even foolish. I suggest that consulting a psychologist be viewed the same as when one visits another professional, for example, a physician.I have written elsewhere about the profound implications surrounding the the process of diagnosis in general, and the diagnosis of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) in particular.
