Looking for Girl Gifts?

by Clare Makin

It was not long ago that the typical gifts for girls involved either dolls or toys resembling domestic appliances. We have come a long way since then and now there is much more from which to choose when it comes to buying gifts for girls.

We have entered the technological age. Girls are using computers, cell phones, Blackberries, MP3 players and video game consoles. If you are looking for a great gift for a girl between the ages of 10 and 20, music downloads, software programs, ring tones, cellular minutes and video games are all viable solutions. Of course, it is important to know the interests of the girl in question. Which types of software or video games interest her the most?

If you know the gift recipient’s interests, music is a great gift. Get a girl a C.D., buy her concert tickets to see her favorite singer/band, or get her a gift card for downloading music. Music is ageless, so there is something to be found for girls of any age.

Pre-teen girls might like “The American Girl” series, older teens give good reviews to “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants”. Right now, Stephenie Meyer’s series, “Twilight” is popular amongst young to older teenage girls. Books are a fantastic gift idea.

Encourage her hobbies and dreams. Have a dancer in your midst? Purchase a gift card from her regular dance supply store. Get a big mirror for her practice area — not for vanity, but for the ability to see the form and postures as she practices her dance routines. How about a singer? Does she dream of one day becoming a famous singing star? Purchase several weeks of voice lessons or buy her a karaoke machine. Writers appreciate books on writing as well as blank notebooks and oodles of pens. Is she an artist? Paints, canvases, pencils, sketchpads or pastels may be the perfect choice in gifts. Is she into sports? If she plays, new equipment is always a great idea. If she loves to watch sports, take her to a game!

The fact is, most girls love “bling”. Jewelry is appreciated as long as you buy her the kind she likes. Find out if she likes the “chunky” or “dainty” look, pay attention to whether she wears silver or gold-toned jewelry and if her taste in earrings run to long and colorful or a more conservative look. Charm bracelets are great for girls with whom you have a special rapport. You can keep adding charms to it with every new occasion if you like.

Give her the gift of your time. Take her out to eat and then to a movie. You might take her bowling or put-put golfing. Shopping at the mall is rarely a bad idea for a gift when it comes to girls. If you cannot go with her, give her gift cards that allow for two people (such as movies, bowling and miniature golf).

Girls are not difficult to buy for as long as you understand their interests and priorities. If you are stumped, ask one of her family members or close-friends for assistance in picking out the right present.
